Kendall Childs
Hello, my name is Kendall Childs
and I have been a member of Prince of Peace Church for seven years and an
Episcopalian all my life. Most people only know my singing voice because
I sing duets with my sister Patricia in the choir. I am also the newest
member of the Jubilate bell choir.
I have been a vestry member of my previous church in Dayton, Ohio- St. Andrews. While on the vestry, I was a member of the diocesan Stewardship
committee and helped to design the stewardship program for St. Andrews. I
will bring this knowledge to the vestry. I believe in tithing ones time,
talent and treasure.
In my spare time, I teach high school English and reading at Moorpark Community High School, which is an alternative high school and I live with my two cats
Kiri and Mr. "B".
Simon Frost
Simon Frost is originally from England and grew up in the small market town of Knaresborough, North Yorkshire. Simon was raised in
the Church of England and, as such, very much appreciates the Episcopal style
of worship and its similarities to his formative church experiences. Simon met
his wife, Jennifer, while reading for his undergraduate degree in Political
Science at The University of Hull, England.
After graduating with honors from the University, Simon spent a year working as
a parliamentary researcher and speech writer in the House of Commons, London. Following their marriage in 2003, Simon and Jennifer settled in Jennifer's native Iowa where, after beginning a business career, Simon graduated from Iowa State University with his MBA. Upon graduation Simon was offered a position with Frank N. Magid
Associates' Entertainment Division based in Sherman Oaks. Simon still works at
Magid in a consulting capacity where he is able to help counsel a number of
high-profile clients in various areas of the entertainment business including
TV, videos games and mobile media.
Simon and Jennifer found a church home in Prince of Peace following an initial
visit to the church on Christmas Eve 2007 and again at Easter 2008. Simon and
Jennifer participated in the Alpha program following Easter 2008 and found a
welcoming and supportive Christian community in Prince of Peace. Simon is
looking forward to being able to use his creative and administrative skills for
the glory of God as a member of the 2010 Prince of Peace Vestry.
George Packer
My wife, Dauna, and I joined
Prince of Peace in 1982, shortly after our second child, Aimee, was born.
Little George (I was Big George) was 4 years old and Danielle was still in the
future. Well, the future is now and Little George is now Big George (I'm Old
George) and partner with his mom in her business, Badge Busters, Aimee is a
doctor (and new mother) in Philadelphia and Danielle graduated in gerontology
studies and works in a Sisters of Mercy facility with 200 elderly residents in
the City by the Bay. My polka dot past includes a few degrees from the Big Blue
Bruins, teaching and making lots of music, working for one of the long lost
saving and loan institutions, and starting several real estate related
companies. Currently I run a commercial real estate brokerage company, CRES
Realty, Inc.
One of the advantages Dauna and I enjoy of being self-employed (there are a
few) is a certain flexibility in scheduling our time. This has permitted us to
become active in the greater Los Angeles community, particularly serving in the
area of recovery. A new hobby of mine is a recently formed non-profit
corporation, New Leaf Housing, Inc., whose mission is to create affordable
housing for homeless, economically-challenged families and at-risk seniors by
rescuing foreclosed and abandoned properties throughout the Los Angeles area.
At Prince of Peace I take part in several ministries that are available
including serving as a Lay Eucharistic Minister both in worship services and
celebrating communion at the homes of some of our parishioners; as a team
member that helps to take our Sunday service to the Woodland Hills Motion
Picture Home every week; as a member of the Parish Life and Facilities
Committees, and as a member of the Wonderful Wednesday fellowship group. I also
help with clergy prayers and Prayers of the People and I am the coffee maven
who helps with the preparation and clean up of the Sunday coffee hour, along
with many "volunteers". I do a few other things at POP because of my
love of Christ, and the Church is Christ working here on earth. And Prince of
Peace is The Church in The Valley, to quote Father Andy Keady.
If elected to the Vestry of 2010 I hope to bring my energy and commitment to
getting things done. I like projects and I like deadlines and I like results. But
I also have a vision for and of Prince of Peace that I want to share with
the 2010 Vestry. It's a 20/20 Vision, a 10 year Vision, a renewal plan to
become the center for Christian ministries serving the entire West Valley, for
the young and old, the rich and poor, the churched and un-churched; to become
the "Welcoming Church" and to share our compassion and our love of
Jesus Christ 24/7. And then, as Isaiah 58 says, "...your light will appear
like the dawn...And the Lord's glory will be your rearguard...And when you
call, the Lord will answer....".
Bruce Roe
I've been a member of Prince of
Peace for 5 years. I've been blessed to be welcomed into this congregation and
I've integrated myself into many ministries within POP. Alpha was the first
introduction to a POP ministry and I've been a part of that ministry ever
since. Through my wife Paula's involvement with the healing team, and through
inspiration from the inner healing conference that POP held with Dr. Charles
Kraft, I became a part of the healing ministry, too.
Two years ago I was extremely flattered to have received a call from a
parishioner I admire very much asking if I'd consider serving on the Vestry. I
gave her what I thought were many "good" reasons why serving on the
Vestry was not where my time and talents would be best served and declined.
Again the following year I was asked about my interest in serving on the
Vestry, but again I declined choosing to put my time and talent into the Alpha
ministry instead. When I got that call again this year I could no longer come
up with a "good" reason not to serve. At some point I realized that I
was thinking of myself and not of serving the Church.
My background in the work place comes from 30 years in the food service
business from restaurant management to my current employer of 20 years,
Gelson's Market, as a Food Service Supervisor for the Service Deli. Both of
these jobs have several things in common, but the most important is customer
service. Good customer service requires you to focus on your customer and not
on yourself. I think that kind of understanding also translates to service
within the Church. As the Body of Christ, we're asked to serve others without
thinking of ourselves first. While this is much easier said than done, I feel
that as a follower of Christ I need to allow myself to "serve"
without thinking of myself first. It is in service to others where we see
Christ's promise to us fulfilled.
It is always an honor to be thought highly enough of to be asked to serve on
the Vestry. If elected to do so, it will be my honor to serve, and I pray
that God would use the talents that He has so graciously given me to be a vital
member of that body.
Annelie Rugg
My husband is Stuart Rugg and my
daughter is Hanna, now in second grade. I grew up in the Northeast (mostly Cape Cod, Massachusetts), graduated from Dartmouth, and came to California in 1990 to
pursue cycling and help run a startup software company. Along the way I landed
a spot as an alternate on the 1992 Olympic road cycling team.
I've lived in the West Valley for almost 15 years. I came to Los Angeles in
1994 to pursue a Ph.D. in Slavic Linguistics (studying Russian and Polish
advertising language) at UCLA, and have worked at UCLA since earning my degree.
I am currently the Director of the UCLA Center for Digital Humanities, which is
a technology/computer center for the faculty and grad students who teach in any
of 17 humanities departments and programs at UCLA.
My church background is centered around the Congregational Church we attended
in my teens on Cape Cod, where I played in the youth handbell choir. I
discovered Prince of Peace six years ago, attending sporadically, until Stuart
and I attended an Easter service and decided to participate in Alpha in spring
2007. We've been coming ever since. I hope to serve by bringing a passion for
helping others, for inspiring others with new ideas, and for leading by the
example of doing.
