Pantry Paper – April 2009

MANY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED MAY9 FOR HUGE FOOD DRIVE We will be sorting food as it arrives from the Woodland Hills Post Office; last year a total of 19,900 lbs. of food was received. Please be at the Prince of Peace parking lot, 5700 Rudnick St., at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, where sorting will continue until dark, and again on Sunday from 8 a.m. until done. We also need drivers with trucks to transport food from the P.O.; call Al Trumpler (818) 887-9384, if you can help. Parents may bring their children; they love to sort the cans and boxes. Awnings, seats, water and food will be provided. 

CITRUS SUNDAY PRODUCE COLLECTION MAY 3 From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., drop off washed, bagged citrus at a fire station near you. Call Greig Smith’s office for participating stations (818) 756-8501. Thanks go to the Councilman’s office and Valley Interfaith Council for their organization of this effort.

SHIFT LEADERS TO BEGIN IN APRIL With the assistance of other shift volunteers, the volunteer named first on the morning or afternoon schedule will be responsible to resolve problems occurring on that shift.

SUPERMARKET FOOD DRIVES Help is needed Saturday, April 4th at Ralph’s on the north side of Victory west of Fallbrook, Saturday, April 11th at Albertson’s on the south side of Victory west of Fallbrook, and Saturday, April 18th at Ralph’s on the north side of Sherman Way east of Shoup. All consist of two hour shifts, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Call Jeff Albee to sign up for the April 4th drive (818) 731-7385, Al Trumpler for the others (818) 887-9384.

WE NEED CASH-OFF SUPERMARKET COUPONS Some are in Entertainment books or the newspaper; others come in the mail. Please drop them at the Pantry.

Please send the name of the person you wish to remember/honor and the reason for it, along with your check, to Earl Lewis, 6036 Shirley Ave., Tarzana, CA 91356. Also, please let us thank you by including your name and address.

IF SOMEONE DROPS OFF A DONATION, please ask them if they would like to receive a thank you note. If so, pull a donation card from the envelope on the bulletin board, fill it out and sign it. You’ll need to ask their name and address, and describe what they donated. Then return the card to the envelope, where it will be passed on to a note writer.

FOOD PANTRY T-SHIRTS ON SALE AT THE PANTRY Medium, Large and Extra Large available for $7 each to help the Pantry.

HUNGER FACT a recent UCLA study found that 76 percent of senior renters in LA County fall below the income level needed for food, housing, health care and transportation.
