Pantry Paper – MAY 2010

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED May 8th at 2:30 p.m., we will be sorting food as it arrives at the Pantry from the Woodland Hills Post Office.  We also need drivers with trucks to transport food from the P.O. Contact Al Trumpler (818) 887-9384.  June 13th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., drop off washed, bagged citrus at a fire station near you during the Citrus Sunday Produce Collection. Contact Greig Smith’s office for participating stations at cd12.org or (818) 756-8501. May 31st , Memorial Day, the Pantry will be closed.   

THANK YOUS for a recent food drive in six gated communities, which collected enough food to fill 2 pickups, 3 SUVs and one flatbed. In charge were the following teens: Shanthi Bolla, Macy Berg, Lindsay Cohen-Weingarten, Caitlin Goldstein, Emma Gottleib, Michael Munro and Jonathon Price. Also thank you to Terri Seidman and shift volunteers who covered for Pantry Supervisor Jeanne Bain from March 29 through April 9, when she was not always at the Pantry.

SUPERMARKET FOOD DRIVES Help is needed Saturday, May 1st at Ralph’s on the north side of Victory west of Fallbrook and Saturday, May 8th at Albertson’s on the south side of Victory west of Fallbrook. Both consist of two hour shifts, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Call Jeff Albee to sign up for the May 1st drive (818) 731-7385, Al Trumpler for the 8th (818) 887-9384.

VOLUNTEER NEWS Welcome new volunteers Stacey Gomez Chaleff, Tresa Morris, Krystin Nish, and Helene Winston. Thanks to their trainers Liz Chaneske and Juanita Stephenson.

WE APPRECIATE SHIFT VOLUNTEERS who are on time for their shifts, 9:45 a.m and 12:15 p.m., and who complete cleanup at the end of the Friday shift, helping the other volunteers. If you are unable to work the day you are scheduled, try switching with someone working the same day during a different week. Or call one of the substitutes listed on the last page of your Volunteer Schedule.

WE NEED CASH-OFF SUPERMARKET COUPONS Some are in Entertainment books or the newspaper; others come in the mail. Please leave them in Jeanne Bain’s envelope on the corner bulletin board.

IF A GROUP DROPS OFF A DONATION, please ask them if they would like to receive a thank you note. If so, pull a donation card from the envelope on the bulletin board, fill it out and sign it. You’ll need to ask their name and address, describe what they donated and MAKE SURE THIS INFORMATION IS LEGIBLE. Then return the card to the envelope, where it well be passed on to a note writer. When someone drops off a personal donation, give them the card to document a charitable deduction.

TRIBUTES For a minimum donation of $5, you can help the Pantry and honor or remember someone. Please send the name of the person you wish to remember/honor and the reason for it, along with your check, to Earl Lewis, 6036 Shirley Ave., Tarzana, CA 91356. Also, please let us thank you by including your name and address.

FAMILY RESCUE CENTER, a Canoga Park food pantry and clothes closet, needs clothing in men’s medium to small sizes, and shoes in medium to small sizes for men, women and children. They may be dropped off Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or Saturday, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The Center is located at the Canoga Park Presbyterian Church, 22103 Vanowen.
