Pantry Paper – JULY 2010

MANY, MANY THANKS Donna Bozzo of Pro Health organized and successfully completed her annual food drive. For the second year, the West Valley Food Pantry has been the recipient of her hard work. In addition to the large amount of canned goods, a cash donation was also received.  The Board of the West Hills Neighborhood Council filled a pickup truck during the June 13th Citrus Sunday Produce Collection at Fields Market. Leading the effort were Charlene Rothstein and Shelly Bright; also pitching in were Dan Brin, Donn Howell, Ron Sobel, Joanne Yvanek-Garb and her two sons, Jacob and Daniel. Lynn Gilson was the link to the Pantry.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED for monthly supermarket food drives. Help is needed Saturday, July 3rd at Ralph’s on the north side of Victory west of Fallbrook and Saturday, July 10th at Albertson’s on the south side of Victory west of Fallbrook. Both consist of two hour shifts, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Call Jeff Albee to sign up for the July 3rd drive (818) 731-7385, Al Trumpler for the 10th (818) 887-9384.

VOLUNTEER NEWS Welcome new volunteers Maggie Archuleta, Robert Hurley, Stephanie Romero, Susan and Kate Roush, Diane Singelyn and Camille Woods. Thanks to their trainers Carol Lombard, Kitty Sarkissian and Joanne, Natalie and Ashley Kim.

WE APPRECIATE SHIFT VOLUNTEERS who are on time for their shifts, 9:45 a.m and 12:15 p.m., and who complete cleanup at the end of the Friday shift, helping the other volunteers. If you are unable to work the day you are scheduled, try switching with someone working the same day during a different week. Or call one of the substitutes listed on the last page of your Volunteer Schedule.

RELUCTANT TO ASK THE CLIENTS THEIR INCOME? It is mandatory, since the Pantry gives out food only to those who are under the Federal poverty guideline (see the laminated sheet on the front table). To keep track of this for Food Pantry records, we include income on a registration card for everyone who comes in.

WE NEED CASH-OFF SUPERMARKET COUPONS Some are in Entertainment books or the newspaper; others come in the mail. Please leave them in Jeanne Bain’s envelope on the corner bulletin board.

IF A GROUP DROPS OFF A DONATION, please ask them if they would like to receive a thank you note. If so, pull a donation card from the envelope on the bulletin board, fill it out and sign it. You’ll need to ask their name and address, describe what they donated and MAKE SURE THIS INFORMATION IS LEGIBLE. Then return the card to the envelope, where it well be passed on to a note writer. When someone drops off a personal donation, give them the card to document a charitable deduction.

DATA ENTRY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED by the Family Rescue Center, a Canoga Park food pantry and clothes closet, for its fundraising database. The Center is located at the Canoga Park Presbyterian Church, 22103 Vanowen. If interested, please contact Dick Shively at richard@recspecs.org. Community service hours will be given.

THE PANTRY WILL BE CLOSED MONDAY, JULY 5 in observance of Independence Day.
