Pantry Paper – JUNE 2011

AS YOU HARVEST YOUR GARDEN THIS SUMMER, we will appreciate any produce you would like to drop off at the Pantry.

THANK YOU FOR LEAVING GROCERIES BY YOUR MAILBOX for the Stamp Out Hunger drive May 14th; 983 postal bins, up from 742 last year, were collected, sorted and stored. We appreciate the volunteers who accomplished this, especially coordinators Lynn Gilson, Jeanne Bain, Al Trumpler and John Willauer.

THANK YOU YOUTH: TUNS OF LOVE (TEENS UNITED FOR NEIGHBORHOOD SERVICE), who led a food drive May 9 – 18 in six gated communities; and the RAGTIME CAST at Woodland Hills Community Church, who collected food at six performances.

SUPERMARKET FOOD DRIVES Help is needed Saturday, June 4th at Ralph’s on the north side of Victory west of Fallbrook, Saturday, June 11th at Albertson’s on the south side of Victory west of Fallbrook, and Saturday, June 18th at Henry’s Market at Ventura and Topanga. All consist of two hour shifts, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Call Jeff Albee to sign up for the June 4th drive (818) 731-7385, Al Trumpler for the 11th (818) 887-9384, and Blake Lichtig for the 18th (818) 415-8995.

CHILDREN’S CLOTHING IS NEEDED by the Family Rescue Center, a Canoga Park food pantry and clothes closet. The Center is located at the Canoga Park Presbyterian Church, 22103 Vanowen. Its hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.

VOLUNTEER NEWS Welcome new volunteers Christine Burton, Sayeh Rafie, Irene Freer, Grace and Hannah Park, and Monica Waton. Also thanks to trainers Jill Rotner and Lois Sklar.

NOW, IT IS EASIER TO SERVE OUR NON-ENGLISH OR LIMITED ENGLISH SPEAKING CLIENTS. The Board has adopted a bilingual application card in English and Spanish as the sole registration card for all future registrations.  This will help us continue our long-standing policy of helping meet the food needs of eligible people in the West San Fernando Valley, regardless of their native language.  By signing or initialing any registration card for any client, you will be acknowledging that you have read and are familiar with this policy.

WE NEED CASH-OFF SUPERMARKET COUPONS some are in Entertainment books or the newspaper; others come in the mail. Please give them to Jeanne Bain at the Pantry.

IF A GROUP DROPS OFF A DONATION, please ask them if they would like to receive a thank you note. If so, pull a donation card from the envelope on the bulletin board, fill it out and sign it. You’ll need to ask their name and address, describe what they donated and MAKE SURE THIS INFORMATION IS LEGIBLE. Then return the card to the envelope, where it will be passed on to a note writer. When someone drops off a personal donation, give them the card to document a charitable deduction.

TRIBUTES For a minimum donation of $5, you can help the Pantry and honor or remember someone. Please send the name of the person you wish to remember/honor and the reason for it, along with your check, to Earl Lewis, 6036 Shirley Ave., Tarzana, CA 91356. Also, please let us thank you by including your name and address.

FOOD PANTRY T-SHIRTS ON SALE AT THE PANTRY Long-sleeve Small, Medium and Large, and some short-sleeve are available for $5 each to help the Pantry.
